Abbotsford, British Columbia, May 28, 2010 – At a ceremony today the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officially renamed the Huntingdon Port of Entry to the Abbotsford-Huntingdon Port of Entry.
In May 2009, Abbotsford MP Ed Fast introduced a motion in the House of Commons to officially change the name to the Abbotsford-Huntingdon Port Of Entry to more accurately identify the location of the border crossing, while respecting the historical significance of the Huntingdon area. In December that motion was carried in the House.
"Changing the name of our border crossing to better identify our location represents a "coming of age" for Abbotsford," said Fast. "The Abbotsford-Huntingdon Port of Entry is critical to the prosperity of our City and our region, and I know our residents will be relieved that the confusion surrounding its location has finally been resolved."
The Canada Border Services Agency has a longstanding history in the Fraser Valley. The first port of entry on this site was officially opened on July 1, 1897, and was defined in the Order-in-Council as "an outport of Customs and a Warehousing Port under the survey of the Port of New Westminster."
"The economy and the safety and security of our border has always been — and will always be — our top priorities. While the name of the Port of Entry may have changed, our commitment to provide this community with the highest level of protection, service and integrity will always remain the same," said Blake Delgaty, Director General, Pacific Region, Canada Border Services Agency.
