Halifax, Nova Scotia, August 1, 2007 -- The Minister of Public Safety, the Honourable Stockwell Day, and U.S. Consul General Harold D. Foster today announced the opening of NEXUS kiosks at Halifax Robert L. Stanfield International Airport.

“Canada’s New Government is proud to announce that Halifax Robert L. Stanfield International Airport is now accepting NEXUS members,” said Minister Day. “The NEXUS card not only serves as a secure alternative to a passport under the U.S. Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative for travel by air, but allows NEXUS members to be expedited through the Canadian and U.S. border clearance processes.”

“We are pleased to be joining our Canadian partners,” said U.S. Consul General Foster, who represented U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the event. “The NEXUS program offers tremendous benefits to border officials and travellers. This program encourages travel between our countries, and we look forward to continuing to expand in the coming months.”

Airports in Vancouver, Toronto, Montréal and Ottawa already operate kiosks for over 130,000 NEXUS members, and the program is expected to begin operating soon in three more cities: Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg.

“Halifax Stanfield’s international reputation for superior customer service will be even further enhanced with NEXUS,” said Eleanor Humphries, President and CEO of the Halifax International Airport Authority. “NEXUS allows for the secure, efficient movement of passengers and having this new service at the Airport will make Halifax an even more desirable place to visit and do business.”

NEXUS is designed to expedite the border clearance process for low-risk, pre-approved travellers into Canada and the United States. In the air mode, NEXUS uses non-invasive iris recognition technology to identify the traveller and verify his or her membership in the program. NEXUS members can also use their cards to enter the United States in the land and marine modes.

Today Minister Day also announced that 24/7 border services have been available at the Halifax Robert L. Stanfield International Airport since April 1, 2007, making customs and immigration screening available to passengers and their luggage at any time day or night.

“The Halifax International Airport is a key part of Nova Scotia’s economy, and travellers across the province will now be able to enjoy the benefits of the NEXUS program and 24/7 border services,” said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
