Proactive enforcement efforts net huge haul

Mississauga, Ontario, May 22, 2008 -- The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that its officers at Toronto Pearson International Airport intercepted over 800 grams of heroin, six kilos of cocaine and 185 kilos of marijuana in two separate shipments over the weekend of May 10 and 11, 2008.

"I want to commend our CBSA officers for the fine work that they do to protect Canadians," said the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety. "The Government of Canada is committed to keeping illegal drugs out of our communities, and our CBSA officers are our first line of defence. That is why, as part of our Government’s National Anti-Drug Strategy, we have invested in the CBSA to enhance its ability to inhibit the cross-border flow of illicit drugs."

On May 10, 2008, during an examination of an aircraft, officers at Toronto Pearson found an 870-gram plastic-wrapped heroin ball worth over $348,000 and six plastic-wrapped cocaine bricks worth $800,000 in an untagged bag.

The following day, May 11, 2008, officers seized over 185 kilos of marijuana worth over $3.7 million. The drugs were hidden in three large duffle bags and were uncovered with the assistance of a detector dog. In total, officers found 82 bricks of marijuana of various sizes.
