Cornwall temporary port of entry

Cornwall, Ontario, September 11, 2009 – The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is advising travellers to expect delays when entering Canada through the temporary border crossing in the City of Cornwall over the upcoming September 11 to 13 weekend.

Increased traffic volumes are expected as a result of the Akwesasne International Powwow on Cornwall Island, which may affect wait times for travellers entering Canada. However, in anticipation of the increased volumes, the CBSA will have extra officers and superintendents on duty throughout the weekend.

Under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Customs Act, all travellers must report to the CBSA without delay upon entering Canada. As the CBSA facility is now temporarily located in the City of Cornwall, travellers must report directly to this temporary port of entry before proceeding to their destination.

Individuals who fail to immediately report to the CBSA upon entering Canada and proceed directly to a destination on Cornwall Island will be subject to appropriate enforcement policies and sanctions.

The CBSA continuously reviews its operations and is working with the City of Cornwall, the Seaway International Bridge Corporation and other stakeholders to look for ways to minimize delays for travellers while ensuring safety and security.

The CBSA is reminding travellers to be patient, have proper identification, receipts or any other relevant documents readily available.
