CBSA - Blueprint 2020 Report - December 2016
Subject matter experts share skills and training

Not long ago, employees in the Canada Border Services Agency's (CBSA) Southern Ontario Region (SOR) expressed a desire for enhanced sharing of specific skills and training. As a result, this year at each port of entry they created a "Subject Matter Expert" (SME) list that identifies our employees who have been trained as trainers in core subject matter areas. These lists are posted on the ports' wiki spaces, and a regional list is posted on the SOR wiki space. When less experienced employees are faced with an unfamiliar situation, for example a drug they cannot identify or a document they suspect is counterfeit, they can consult the list to find a SME who they can call on for guidance. Based on the number of views to the Regional SME wiki space, it is clear that employees are accessing the information.
